As I go through answering questions in my ask box, I see a lot of insecurity when it comes to being a popular or non-popular blog in the roleplaying community.
I think it’s important that I stress that being in the roleplay community is not about being popular. It’s not about having a thousand followers. It’s not about being able to please everyone. It’s not about having every single person like you. It’s not about being the best roleplayer of [insert character name here].
Roleplay is about having fun. It’s about communicating positively with your partners and potential partners. It’s about being good at what you feel you’re good at, and trying to improve where you want to improve.
So many people on here feel that because they don’t have x amount of followers, that they’re a terrible roleplayer, and that is just not the case. If you want more followers or partners, you need to reach out to people. Follow roleplay blogs and blogs that follow that blog. See if you can find someone you really connect with. Make an open post on your blog and see if people respond to it. I am constantly pointing people to my Resources section that has several options for you to find partners.
If you’re too nervous to reach out, you can go to my affiliate RP Buddy Search and make an advert on there explaining what you’re interested in, your rules, characters, e-mail, or whatever medium of roleplay you prefer and if people are interested, they will contact you.
And on another note, if people do not contact you through this method, it does not mean you’re incapable of finding a partner. Understand that the number of people that follow my affiliates are only a fraction of the roleplay community.
Someone has told you they don’t like your character. So? They’re not the partner for you then, are they?
Someone says that your writing skills are terrible. So? They’re not the partner for you then, are they?
Someone has mentioned that you just suck at roleplay. So? They’re not the partner for you then, are they?
If someone is being negative to you about your roleplaying abilities, your character, your writing or just you in general, get away from that. There is absolutely no reason that you should stick around such a person or # of persons if they’re acting rude.
Stop thinking you’re terrible because you don’t have 100+ followers. Stop thinking you’re awful because not a lot of people roleplay with you. Stop thinking you’re bad just because someone has said you were before. Stop thinking roleplay is all about being popular. Stop thinking you can’t find partners because you’re shy. Stop thinking you can’t find partners because you like x genre.
Because none of that is true and you should be having fun.
Fun being the keyword here. If you’re not doing that, then you should find another partner or another medium of roleplay that suits you and makes you happy.
Do what you do as long as it makes you happy. That’s all.
